could this have been my problem why my belt snapped?

the top of the belt is only to cool the tranmission so i doubt that would be a problem. as long as the belt widths and heights are correct to there highest point you should be fine

that could be why it was rubbing the casing and maybe got a bit hot and delaminated, i think the slots in the top also help it to bend around the variator and clutch
